For Writers: A Fun Monday Meme

You may or may not know that I am the writer behind the FaithWriters blog. On Friday, I posted a fun Friday meme, where visitors were encouraged to pass it along on their own blogs. Well, that's what I'm doing today, only instead of a Fun Friday Meme, I'm titling it a Fun Monday Meme (makes sense, right?).

Here's how it works:

1. Copy and paste the following questions to the comments and replace my answers with your own.

2. If you have a blog, copy and paste these questions and your answers to your blog.

3. Challenge your readers to do the same on their blog.

If you don’t have a blog, skip #’s 2 & 3!

All of this week’s questions have to do with writing (hence, the title of this post: A Writer’s Meme)

What’s your favorite genre of writing? Mystery/Suspense

How often do you get writer’s block? Hmmm…usually around chapter 4 or 5 of my novels, but never on articles. Always have a plethora of ideas.

How do you fix it? Going to the movies with my refillable bucket of popcorn and a large Diet Coke.

Do you type or write by hand? 60 seconds of writing by hand = major writer’s cramp. I love my laptop!

Do you save everything you write? Losing an entire book taught me a valuable lesson. Now I use Mozy.com to backup everything.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it? Sure!

Do you have a constructive critic? My fabulous crit partner, Susan, who sings my praises and kicks me in the pants at the same time.

Did you ever write a novel? Yep, it’s with an agent now.

What genre would you love to write but haven’t? I really don’t think there’s a genre I haven’t tried at one time or another.

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will? Except fantasy. Not my bag.

How many writing projects are you working on right now? 4, I think.

Do you write for a living? Do you want to? I want to and I do!

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper? Yes and No, respectively.

Have you ever won an award for your writing? A few…

Do you ever write based on your dreams? Not yet.

Do you favor happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers? Depends on the story. And my mood.

YOUR TURN!

What’s your favorite genre of writing? Historical fiction

How often do you get writer’s block? Too often. Probably every three or four chapters.

How do you fix it? Listening to music that reminds me of my book, watching the book trailer I made for it (gives me a little creative boost every time) and eating lots and lots of chocolate.

Do you type or write by hand? Type. Although I will write if the inspiration comes when I’m somewhere with no computer access. That’s why I always carry a notebook.

Do you save everything you write? YES.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it? Definitely. I still plan on re-working the novel I wrote when I was twelve.

Do you have a constructive critic? Yes, my entire critique group as well as a few writer friends online who graciously read and critique my chapters.

Did you ever write a novel? Yes, at age 12, and working on another one now.

What genre would you love to write but haven’t? I’d love to write an epic fantasy although I don’t know if I’d be able to do all that worldbuilding.

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will? Mystery/suspense. For some reason my mind just can’t come up with good mystery ideas and my suspense scenes always feel fake.

How many writing projects are you working on right now? 1 mainly, although I do occassionally go back and add some ideas for two others that I have.

Do you write for a living? Do you want to? No, but I do freelance a little and I’d like to eventually write for a living. Or at least supplemental income

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper? For a student newspaper back in college. No magazines yet.

Have you ever won an award for your writing? One a few years ago for FaithWriters Writing Challenge. It wasn’t an award exactly but it did get printed in an anthology.

Do you ever write based on your dreams? Not yet, but I do have one idea that I wrote down from a very vivid dream. Had another one the other night, but I couldn’t remember it long enough to write it down so that one is now lost to the dream eaters.

Do you favor happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers? I like happy endings best (probably why I’m going to be a member of RWA soon ) although two of my favorite books have bittersweet endings

What’s your favorite genre of writing? Fantasy

How often do you get writer’s block? It depends on what I'm writing and the pace I'm writing at. If the story is interesting and I'm squeezing it in or rushing to get it done, then it doesn't pop up too often. But once I lose interest or focus on a project, I get writer's block nearly every time I sit down to work on it.

How do you fix it? I have to change my tactics each time to ward off the writer's block...it's tricky and knows how to adapt. :P My current solution seems to be sipping on coffee while listening to strange "Vocaloid" songs. Caffeine and music usually help. Oddly enough, changing the time of day I write during also helps a lot (the writer's block must not be able to find me...haha).

Do you type or write by hand? Mostly type, especially for novels. If it's a short story, sometimes I'll write it by hand first.

Do you save everything you write? Yep. At least, I started doing so once I became a little more serious about my writing.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it? Definitely, but the original idea usually ends up getting altered quite a bit by the time I'm done.

Do you have a constructive critic? Hmm...I used to have a writer friend who I exchanged a few stories with, and we'd provide some constructive criticism for each other. Haven't done that in a while, though.

Did you ever write a novel? Unpublished novels needing LOTS of revisions and rewrites count, right? If so, I've written three, and I'm working on a fourth.

What genre would you love to write but haven’t? I've already experimented with most of the ones that've caught my eye, but I really haven't done many mystery stories. I'd love to be able to write a good detective story once in my life, but I don't know if it'll happen. I'd also love to write at least one good historical fiction story and action story, but they also seem difficult for me.

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will? Um.......smut? Ha! Not sure that that's really a genre, but I can honestly say I've never written it and NEVER will.

How many writing projects are you working on right now? Actively, only one. But I have quite a few waiting for me once I'm finished.

Do you write for a living? Do you want to? Currently, I can't even claim to be making a living at anything. So no, I don't really write for a living, but I have been doing a little freelance writing online. I would love to make a living out of it, though.

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper? Only my college newspaper.

Have you ever won an award for your writing? I got a small amount of scholarship money once for a paper I wrote in college. The paper won the regional undergraduate scholarship at the Alpha Chi convention during my junior year.

Do you ever write based on your dreams? Sometimes. I have a few story ideas waiting to be worked on that originated from dreams, but I'm not sure if I've actually written any of them out yet.

Do you favor happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers? Happy endings, without a doubt. I prefer reading stories with happy endings, and they're just about the only thing I can write, too. Even when I try to write a sad ending, I usually end up changing it into something happier at the last minute.
