The 12 Books of Christmas Day 3

The names in the hat are piling up! Thanks to everyone who has commented so far!

And the 3rd choice of books goes to...

KAREN K!

Congrats, Karen! I'll be in touch soon!

Today, we have a treat. Jo Huddleston, whose book That Summer is one of the 12 books in this fabulous list of giveaways, has agreed to share her journey to publication. Even if you're not a writer, you will be inspired by the way God worked out His plan for her life.

Enjoy!

MY WRITING JOURNEY

by JO HUDDLESTON

When deciding to write for publication, all I had was aspiration and hope. I had not studied the craft of writing but I had loved books and reading all my life. So I sent my first stories to Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal. Those form rejection letters came back immediately. It didn’t take me long to learn that I needed help.

I scoured the magazines in the mall bookstore and found some about writing. I discovered names of books about all aspects of writing and lists of writing conferences to attend and gain knowledge.

I decided my first conference would be the Professionalism in Writing School conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’d read in my new magazines that I should take samples of my writing and business cards to identify myself when I made an appointment with an editor or agent. I didn’t have business cards and was relieved when I read that I could put my information on a 3x5 card and share that with people.

My husband let me out at the front of the large hotel where the conference was held while he parked the car. I stepped into the area between the outer entrance doors and the doors into the lobby. A young lady came inside pulling a carrier stacked with books and paper materials. At the threshold of the first doors when she pulled her carrier into the space where I stood, everything tilted and scattered around us. I timidly helped her stack things back as best as I could. Didn’t introduce myself, didn’t recognize her.

I’d learned in my teen years when I was in an unfamiliar situation it would serve me well to keep my
View on Amazon
mouth shut and my eyes and ears open. So from the outset of the conference that’s what I did. The attendees appeared to know what they were doing so I watched and followed their lead. But among these seasoned writers’ conference-goers I was so invisible I didn’t even realize I was invisible.

I got in line to register and received my folder and name tag. I noticed that many folks were getting in another line before entering the auditorium, so I again followed. When my turn at the front of the line came I realized they were putting their names on sheets for 15-minute appointments, each sheet having a name at the top. The instructions indicated these sheets were for time with editors and agents. I signed up on an editor’s sheet and made myself a note of my allotted time and the room number.

As others filed into the auditorium so did I. Alone among groups, I found a seat with nobody on either side. I sat, ramrod straight, eyes and ears open. Someone from the left got my attention by asking if the seat beside me was taken. I shook my head. A woman with a beautiful Texas drawl introduced herself, forcing me to speak my first words at my first writers’ conference as I in turn introduced myself.

I browsed the book room and it was like finding delightful presents on Christmas morning. When the editor’s appointment time came I made my way toward the designated room and waited my turn outside the door.

I went in the room, sat across the table from a perky young lady and pushed my 3x5 card toward her without a word. She picked up my card, looked at it and said, “I’m Karen Ball.” She asked me what I wrote, a question I couldn’t answer. I just wrote whatever came out of my head, but I didn’t say that to her. She was gracious to recognize that I was out of my depth and prodded me along by asking what I had brought for her to look at. I had been writing short prayers for women in circumstances they might find themselves and I’d brought five prayers with me.

I didn’t know that Karen Ball was a fiction editor and she probably could have told me so and to go sign up with a nonfiction editor. No—kind, sweet, and professional Karen Ball read each of my five prayers. She wanted to take my pages back to Tyndale House with her and I agreed. I did not know the significance of her doing so. I did know I hadn’t made any copies of them but they were in my computer, so not to worry.

Releases December 8
Before too long Karen phoned me that Tyndale would like me to write more prayers. The result was Tyndale published two prayer books by me: Amen and Good Night, God and Amen and Good Morning, God. Later, another company published my devotional book His Awesome Majesty. As I learned the craft and used a writers’ market guide, I began submitting short stories and articles—and getting them published.

That Professionalism in Writing School conference was good for me and I attended several years. Oh, and by the way, that young lady who spilled her books in the hotel entrance was Bodie Thoene. She and her husband Brock were the keynote speakers for the conference. And that woman with the beautiful Texas drawl who sat beside me in the auditorium was Vickie Phelps and is now a close writer-friend. We’ve coauthored three e-books and our husbands also get along well.

I now have a 3-book publishing contract for my first novels. I’ve finished Book 1, That Summer, which released in December 2012. Book 2 is scheduled to release in April 2013 and book 3 in September 2013.

Perhaps one of the hardest things about writing for publication is having patience. My patience muscles have grown much stronger over the years. This writing journey is never-ending. How could I not write? What writing ability I have comes from God and I must be the best steward of that gift that I can be.

Author Meet & Greet: Sherri Wilson Johnson

I love to promote other authors! Not only because I am one myself and am well aware of the importance of helping writers market and promote their books, but also because I love to introduce you to those you may not have heard of before. This is a great way to discover some wonderful gems in the treasure chest of books out there!

Sherri Wilson Johnson is a fellow Oak Tara author and ACFW member. She lives in Georgia with her husband and two children, and is a graduate of the Christian Writers Guild writing course. She is also an active blogger and a former homeschooling mom. She loves to dream of romantic places and romance in general–good, clean romance, that is. She is passionate about purity and sexual integrity. Sherri is a bird-watcher, loves the ocean, roller coasters, ice cream, her family and her Chihuahua, who faithfully sits by her side every day when she writes.

Grab a cup of coffee (or a can of Diet Coke) and get to know this wonderful lady and learn about her books.

Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise your readers.

1. I am terrified of horses, which is kind of funny since my new book is about a cowboy and a horse ranch.
2. I have a bad habit of singing Christmas songs all year long.
3. I secretly dream of going on the show Wipeout, although my family has begged me to spare them the humiliation.

Share something about your day-to-day life that might help readers feel as though they know you a little better.

In addition to being a writer, I also work part-time from home as a bookkeeper. Most mornings I start the day with Bible study and then do my bookkeeping work. After that if I’m not running errands or meeting with someone, I write. I would write all day and night if I could. I’m actively involved in church and love learning as much as I can about the Lord to help me through this crazy life.

How many books do you have published and where can they be found?

I currently have two published books. My debut novel, To Dance Once More (OakTara), was released in September 2011. Song of the Meadowlark (OakTara) released in September 2012. You can find links at my website, www.sherriwilsonjohnson.com .

How does your faith play into your work?

I’ve always said I would never write anything that shamed my dad. He was a Southern Baptist preacher. What it really boils down to is that I would never write anything that would shame my Lord and make a mockery of my faith. But other than that aspect of it, I can say that the struggles my family has gone through have tested and strengthened my faith and that overflows into my writing. When you have something so marvelous at your very core, it can’t help but spill out in your writing. It’s actually easier for me to write about my faith and demonstrate my faith through my writing than it is to show it sometimes.

As a speaker, what’s your favorite topic?

I love to encourage people along their journey—to spread the joy and fulfillment of living according to the Lord’s will for your life. Whether it is about homeschooling, writing and publication, or women’s issues, I always sprinkle in the wonderful news of God’s grace and forgiveness and try to encourage people to live according to their giftedness.

What is your favorite thing to write about?

I love to write about romance. That’s no surprise. In real life, I’m always trying to match-make. But you can’t build a story around just the romance. I love to write about change—some sort of forward movement for my characters. Life never stays the same and neither do people. Most of my characters need some sort of tweaking (like all of us) and so whether it is forgiveness, mercy, grace, acceptance, turning from a sinful path, I love to write about change.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about conveying the message of purity and sexual integrity to the world. I have worked with teens and women as a volunteer small group leader at church and I’ve seen the struggle people go through when faced with the temptations of this world. That’s one reason I write clean romances.

Tell us about your first book, Song of the Meadowlark.

In Song of the Meadowlark, Cora Buchanan’s husband disappears one night after being arrested and bailed out for drug trafficking. In a flash, Cora’s life is turned upside down. The man she loves with all her heart is now a fugitive on the run. She waits a year and then decides to leave the town she lived in with him to return home to her parents to mend their broken relationship. Although she hopes Clark will return and be found not guilty, she can’t wait on him and must attempt to repair the broken bridges with her parents. She braces herself for the harsh words that will undoubtedly come over the fact that they were right in their opinion of Clark prior to her marriage to him. While traveling through Georgia on her way home to Florida, Cora’s car breaks down and leaves her stranded. At first she curses her old car but later realizes if it had not been for it she would not have found a new beginning.

Here is the back cover blurb:
When trusting others only leads to pain and rejection, and loving ends only in loss, what will it take to restore hope again? Shunned by the uncovered truth about her missing husband’s secret life, Cora Buchanan sets out on a road trip for home to mend her broken relationship with her parents. When her car breaks down, she’s stranded in a small Georgia town. While staying at the struggling Southern Hope Ranch, she meets little Susie O’Reilly, who unexpectedly fills a void in Cora’s heart. But Rex, Susie’s rugged cowboy father who lost his wife a year earlier, seems to go out of his way to either confront or avoid Cora. It doesn’t help her comfort level that the news continues to report missing and murdered women in the area. Cora has no idea just how close to home the crimes will hit…or how much the sweet sound of the meadowlark’s song at the ranch will impact her future.

Where can fans find you or your books on the internet?

Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us about yourself, Sherri. Much success to you in all of your writing endeavors!

Sherri would love to hear from you! Have you read one of her books? Do they sound intriguing? Share your thoughts!

Thyme for a Giveaway!

April Love has always dreamed of being a chef. But she didn't expect a former fiancé or murder to be part of the recipe for her new job. When April Love signs on to be an in-house chef at an old lakeshore mansion in Canoga Lake, Wisconsin, she comes face to face with her long-lost love, the drop-dead gorgeous Marc Thorne. It doesn't take long for their old magnetism to recharge, but how can she trust the guy who left her nearly at the altar eight years earlier? Her gut tells her something happened to Marc in between-something he's reluctant to reveal. When April's boss is murdered, Marc is accused of the crime. Unless April can find out who really killed Ramón Galvez, her chances for love will end up at the county jail. But someone else is just as determined she not solve the mystery...and will go to any length to stop her.

I first met Pam Meyers at the 2009 ACFW conference in Denver. She told me she was represented by agent Terry Burns, and a few months later, so was I! Pam and I both had the thrill of receiving contracts from Oak Tara within about a month of each other. In fact, when Terry called me from a writer's conference to let me know I'd been offered a contract, Pam was there with him and got to share in my excitement. Her book came out on November 14, one day before mine. Pretty cool, huh?

I had the privilege of reading Thyme for Love and reviewing it this month for FaithfulReader.com. I love romantic suspense and cozy mysteries, and this one is a little of both. It's a light, fun read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I happen to have two copies of Pam's book and would love to give one to you!

Simply leave a comment on this blog post and you'll be entered to win. Easy-peasy! Be sure to leave your email address so I can get in touch with you if you're the winner. Winner will be announced next Friday, January 27.

If you'd like to read my full review of Thyme for Love, you can do that HERE.

The Book Stops Here: Remembering Christmas by Dan Walsh

I'm taking a break from my Mind over Madi excitement to promote  a book written by an author I've come to really enjoy. I met Dan Walsh for the first time a couple years ago at the ACFW conference in Denver.  His first book was coming out at the time and now, two years later, he's got several books under his belt and is even collaborating on a novel with Gary Smalley! Cool, huh?

Today I have the pleasure of reviewing his latest novel, REMEMBERING CHRISTMAS. And just in time for the holidays! Here's a blurb:

Rick Denton lives his life on his terms. He works hard, plays hard, and answers to no one. So when his mother calls on Thanksgiving weekend begging him to come home after his stepfather has a stroke, Rick is more than a little reluctant. He's never liked Art and resents the man's presence in his life, despite the fact that his own father abandoned the family when Rick was just twelve. When what was supposed to be just a couple days helping out at the family bookstore turns into weeks of cashing out old ladies and running off the homeless man who keep hanging about, Rick's attitude sours even more.

Still, slowly but surely, the little bookstore and its quirky patrons--as well as the lovely young woman who works at his side each day--work their magic on him, revealing to Rick the truth about his family, his own life, and the true meaning of Christmas. With skillful storytelling, Dan Walsh creates a Christmas story will have readers remembering every good and perfect gift of Christmas.

A full review of REMEMBERING CHRISTMAS will be posted soon on FaithfulReader.com, but let me just say that I highly recommend this book. The characters are expertly crafted, the plot is engaging, plus it's set in my favorite-ever era of the 1980s! Could it get any better than that?

REMEMBERING CHRISTMAS will make you smile and warm your heart this holiday season. Definitely one for the Christmas keepsake shelf.

Watch for the link to my full review in the next week or so. In the meantime, you can purchase Remembering Christmas: A Novel on Amazon.com or at your local bookstore.

Check out this tasty book from more than 60 of your favorite fiction authors!

IS THIS COVER GREAT, OR WHAT?

A couple months ago, tween author Nicole O'Dell came up with scrumptious idea. She decided to collect recipes from lots of fiction authors. Recipes that were taken from the books those authors have written. She put out a call to her friends, informing us that her goal was to have this cookbook available in e-book format by November 1st. Then, she sat back as the recipes poured in. She whipped them together and voila! NOVEL MORSELS was born.

Okay, it wasn't quite that easy. With interest from a whopping 60 authors, Nicole worked hours and hours on this project. But, as promised, she met her goal and NOVEL MORSELS is now available.

Nicole says she intends this cookbook to be an annual thing. Is that cool, or what? I am in awe of the fact that Nicole has taken on this project. She has ten books coming out in the next several months, is the host of Teen Talk Radio, and is the mother of six, including a set of toddler triplets! How does she find the time? Nicole is Superwoman. I'm convinced of it.

Well, I am honored to have a recipe included among the amazing authors featured in NOVEL MORSELS. My recipe is taken from my debut novel, Mind over Madi. There is one dish Madi cooks that her kids actually like. I've titled it, Madi's Mean Mostaccioli. I've made it for my family a few times myself, so I can testify to it's yummy-ness.

As I mentioned, 60 authors and more than 120 of their book-based recipes are featured in NOVEL MORSELS! Find out what their characters snack on!

Check out the authors included:

Donna Alice Patton
Nancy Thelen

NOTE: I will be offering ways you can get this cookbook for FREE, so be sure to watch for that.

In the meantime, if you just can't wait (and I won't blame you if you can't!), NOVEL MORSELS is available for purchase on NICOLE'S WEBSITE, but will soon also be available on Amazon.com

Bon appetit!

The Book Stops Here: Hello Hollywood by Janice Thompson

From the back cover:

Athena Pappas is the head writer on Stars Collide, one of the most popular sitcoms in television history. But when Vegas comedian Stephen Cosse is brought in to beef up the show's suddenly sagging ratings, she starts to worry about her job. Sparks fly as the competition--and attraction--between the two writers heats up. Athena has never had a problem writing the romances of her characters. So why is her own love life so hard to script?

With humor and a Hollywood-insider viewpoint, Hello, Hollywood! delivers lots of laughs as Athena and Stephen discover that not being in control of the plot of their lives might just be the best thing that ever happened to them.

My Thoughts:

Multi-published author Janice Thompson's tagline is: Love, Laughter, and Happily-Ever-Afters. (love that!) So, as you can deduce, Janice writes romantic humor. And her romances end happily. Yay!

I recently got the chance to review her latest novel, Hello Hollywood!, the second book in the Backstage Pass series. I haven't read the first, Stars Collide, (but it is ready and waiting on my Kindle!) so I didn't have any preconceived notions of what the series was about. I only knew that I love Janice's writing, so how could I turn down the opportunity to review her latest book?

Hello Hollywood! did not disappoint. This book contained romance, drama and, of course, lots of humor. Like many other character families Janice Thompson has created throughout her writing career, the Pappas family was quirky, fun, and loud. If you loved the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you'll love the Pappas's. In fact, I kept picturing Nia Vardalos as main character Athena. Food and family are the driving forces behind this novel, and is what makes it especially endearing.

Then there's the romance factor, which is sweet and funny. Athena falls for Stephen, the guy she thinks may be trying to steal her position as head writer of a highly rated sitcom. The inclusion of Stephen's 11-year-old daughter and a Greek domestic dog, brings the story into a whole new - and better - dimension.

Hello Hollywood! is a fast-paced, quick read. Although certainly a stand-alone, I look forward to reading the first book in the series, in which the hero and heroine are apparently the stars of the sitcom Athena writes for. My full review of Hello Hollywood! will be featured on www.FaithfulReader.com later this month, and I'll be sure to leave a link for you. But, for now, just take my word for it. If you love romantic comedies, or, better yet, love, laughter, and happily-ever-afters, pick up a copy of Janice's latest book. You'll be glad you did.

*“Available September 2011 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”*

**Thanks to Revell for providing me with a copy of this book to review. A positive review was not required and all thoughts are my own.**

She’s all about going green. Could he be her white knight—or will he make her see red?

Tree-huggin’, animal-lovin’ Bridget Pickwick-Buchanan is on a mission. Well, two. First she has to come to terms with being a widow at thirty-three. After all, it’s been four years and even her five-year-old niece and nephew think it’s time she shed her widow’s weeds. Second, she needs to find a buyer for her family’s estate—a Biltmore-inspired mansion surrounded by hundreds of acres of unspoiled forestland. With family obligations forcing the sale, Bridget is determined to find an eco-friendly developer to buy the land, someone who won’t turn it into single-family homes or a cheesy theme park.

Enter J. C. Dirk, a high-energy developer from Atlanta whose green property developments have earned him national acclaim. When he doesn’t return her calls, Bridget decides a personal visit is in order. Unfortunately, J. C. Dirk is neither amused nor interested when she interrupts his meeting—until she mentions her family name. In short order, he finds himself in North Carolina, and Bridget has her white knight—in more ways than one. But there are things Bridget doesn’t know about J. C., and it could mean the end of everything she’s worked for…and break her heart.

READ MY REVIEW

During the course of his 60-year ministry, John Osteen combined an extraordinary love for people with a vision for ministry best described in his own words: "No limits." In this hardcover volume not only includes content from John's sermon transcripts, but also a foreword and commentary written by his son, Joel; the principles of this "no limits" faith come alive again for a new generation.

For the moments of struggle and temptation that every man faces, and the times in life when he feels surrounded and under attack, John's message is profoundly simple-those moments are precisely the time for an unwavering faith. In this book, John schools today's believers in seven qualities of unwavering faith:

1. It hears and sees what the world cannot see or hear.
2. It prays earnestly even though it has already heard the answer.
3. It is strong when there is no evidence of the answer.
4. It always says, "Go Again!"
5. It goes on when there's just a little evidence.
6. It believes for the big when it sees the little.
7. It begins with nothing but ends up doing mighty things for God.

Osteen also provides principles for those times when faith doesn't seem to be working. BECOMING A MAN OF UNWAVERING FAITH is a guidebook to stronger faith, from a man who spent a lifetime testing its limits.

My First FRIDAY FIVE

I thought I'd start something new and fun this week. Every Friday, I'm going to post "The Friday Five." This "five" can be anything from 5 things I've learned this week to a writing-related list of 5 ways to bring your character to life. Anything goes! I hope you'll jump in on the fun.

For my first Friday Five post, I thought I'd list  5 of my favorite fabulous authors. Notice, I didn't say THE top 5 favorites. I have way too many favorite authors to choose the top 5. But these authors are ones I have read recently, most are relatively new to the publishing scene, and all have writing styles I love.

So here you go.

1. Christa Allan - Walking on Broken Glass was one of the best books I read last year. Christa's voice is fresh and funny, but she also knows how to weave a wonderful story and pack a punch with her message without preaching. I am currently reading her sophomore novel, The Edge of Grace, and a review will be posted on www.faithfulreader.com next month. If you like books that deal with difficult issues in a real way, check out Christa's books. You're guaranteed to become a fan.

2. Ginny Ytrrup - Ginny's debut novel, Words, came out this year and I was blown away. It wasn't just the plot that cinched it, but the characters Ginny created jumped off the pages and into my heart. Eagerly awaiting her next book, Lost & Found, due out in February.

3. Marybeth Whalen - Another "newer" author I recently discovered when I read her second novel, She Makes it Look Easy, for review. Wow. Loved it! Again, tough issues, but done with such excellence and grace. As soon as I get some extra time, I'm going to read her first novel, The Mailbox, which I've heard is wonderful, as well.

4. Julie Carobini - Author of five novels, all with beach themes (Chocolate Beach, Truffles by the Sea, Sweet Waters, A Shore Thing, Fade to Blue), Julie has a special gift of providing a fun and beautiful escape from every day life (Hey...a life at the beach trumps mine almost every time!). If you haven't read any of Julie's books, what are you waiting for? The beach awaits!

5. Catherine West - Quick plug for my former critique partner. Cathy's first novel, Yesterday's Tomorrow, came out in March and I can't talk it up enough. Gritty and witty, she's definitely an author to watch. The 49 4-star+ Amazon reviews (45 of them 5 star!) says it all.

Hope you take time to check out my recommended Friday Five Fabulous Authors!

Have an awesome weekend!
