Meanwhile, her ex-husband, Harold, is back in the picture after a stint in prison, and he’s looking for revenge. He’ll do anything to see Joleen’s reputation and her relationship with their children ruined. Harold has devised an elaborate plan to slander Joleen and ruin her financially, and will stop at nothing – even murder – to see it through.

At forty-four, Joleen has seen a thing or two. She became a mother at sixteen, and her five highly independent children are now grown. Jasmine is a successful ad executive, but has a drinking problem. Jill is a tough cop, while middle child Jennifer surprises them all with her tenacity. Jinger is a self-centered glamour girl, and the baby of the family, Jade, is utterly spoiled.

All the interesting men they meet get tossed around by this pack of barracudas. Adding to the mix are some drug deals, a kidnapping, insurance fraud, and secrets from the past, making life very complicated, indeed.

With grit, humor, action, intrigue and romance, My Mother the Man-Eater is a redemptive story about a woman whose search for meaning in life sends her straight into . . . the arms of God.

You could be the 2,000th member of ACFW!

American Christian
Fiction Writers

OK, so I just found out that ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) is THIS close to reaching 2,000 members. Pretty cool, right? What's even cooler is that YOU could be the 2,000th member and walk away with a mega box of books and/or other prizes. Now THAT would be even better than cool. That would be STUPENDOUS! (Wow, it's been so long since I've used that word--or have I ever used that word?-- I had to use it here).

First, let me brag on ACFW. I joined in early 2007 and it has been nothing but a blessing to me. More of a blessing than I ever thought it would be. Here are just a few reasons I love this organization:

The members! When I first joined, I'll admit I was star-struck. Rubbing shoulders with multi-published authors I loved to read was slightly intimidating. Authors like Colleen Coble, Brandilyn Collins, Kristin Billerbeck, and dozens of other authors on my cool list. But seriously, it wasn't long before authors like these were answering questions I posted to the Loop (see below) and even critiquing my work. It was amazing to me (and still is) the ways these pros go out of their way to help newbies like me.

The Loop. Have a question about writing? The Loop is an active email loop where you can get questions answered, chat about the Topic of the Week, and stay in touch with what's happening at ACFW. There have been times when I've asked a question and have gotten 10 responses within ten minutes of posting. See what I mean about being quick to help?

The Genesis Contest. The first year I entered, I didn't final. But the feedback I received from the judges was awesome and I took their advice and polished up my manuscript. The following year, I entered the same ms and ended up placing 2nd in my category. Just getting my work in front of an agent and editor was priceless. This year, I entered a different novel and finaled again. Many members who entered the Genesis have gone on to receive contracts and their books can now be found on bookstore shelves. Click HERE for more info on the Genesis.

The Conference. I attended my first conference in September and cannot even tell you how fabulous it was. The speakers, the workshop teachers, the coordinators, fellow writers... I get teary just thinking about my experience. I am counting the days until next September, when the next conference will take place (within driving distance this time! Yay!) Read about my conference experiences HERE.

The Courses. One of the perks of membership is the FREE writing courses, all done through email correspondence. One of the most helpful was the Conference First Time Attendees course, where all of my questions about attending my first conference were answered. The courses are all taught by published/trained authors. This month's course is "How to Write Your Passion and Still Get Published."

Critique Groups. I joined my first official critique group through ACFW. That group has since broken up but three of those authors are now published! I am currently involved in another ACFW crit group with 4 other members. In addition to critiquing, we encourage each other, pray for each other, brainstorm together, and sometimes give each other a much needed kick in the pants. I adore my group!

So this is only a few of the many reasons I love ACFW. And I guarantee, if you join, YOU'LL LOVE IT, TOO!

As I stated above, ACFW is THIS close to reaching 2,000 members. If you are the 2,000th member to join, you will win a fabulous prize! And if you do sign up, mention my name because the referring member also gets a few goodies.

Seriously, if you are an aspiring Christian novelist, there is no better organization than ACFW to help you along the way.

Hope to see you there!

P.S. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I can't guarantee I'll have an answer, but I can either find out or point you in the right direction.

Blog tours

It would be nice for authors if books just sold themselves, wouldn't it? If, once a book was printed, there was nothing to do but sit back and watch as readers flocked to the bookstores to buy their copy.

Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. Years ago, publishing companies took care of most, if not all, of the marketing. Authors were barely involved. But with technology and web presence, not to mention marketing budget cuts in publishing houses, authors are expected to play a large part in promoting their books.

One of the newest and perhaps most effective ways of getting the word out about new novels is through a blog tour. Blog tours can last as breifly as one week, but usually run for one month. The author enlists one friend or fellow author to promote their book every day for a month. Blog posts can consist of an author interview, a summary of the book, author bio, and often include a giveaway of the book. Because each blog tour participant has various readers and followers, this is a great way to get the word out to potentially thousands (even millions) of people about a particular book.

While blog tours may not cause a book to become an instant best seller or bring in thousands of extra dollars, they do serve the invaluable purpose of creating buzz about a story. And this ultimately results in added book sales and more awareness of a particular author.

I've participated in a few blog tours, myself. The most recent was Jenness Walker's, promoting her debut novel, Double Take. In November, I'll be posting about another debut author, Erica Vetch, helping to spread the word about her novel, The Bartered Bride.

If you're a Christian fiction writer who is interested in hosting a blog tour, you can either organize it yourself or hire someone to handle it for you. A couple of great options are Write Integrity Editorial Services and The Christian Fiction Blog Alliance.

If you are a Christian fiction reader who is interested in checking out blog tours to find new authors, discover great reads, and possibly win free books, visit Christian Fiction Online Magazine every month for a list of current blog tours.

NOTE ABOUT THE 12 BOOKS OF CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY...

I changed my mind about the day that the winner will be announced each week for the giveaways (hey, it's my blog, I'll change my mind if I want to!) :-) Entries will be accepted through Friday at midnight and winners will be announced in a very short blog post on Saturday morning. This is great news for you because it gives you one more day to enter! Check back tomorrow morning to find out the winner of Christmas Miracles, this week's giveaway by Tracy Ruckman. And if you haven't yet entered, be sure to pop on over to THIS POST and leave your comment.

Good luck!

Christian Fiction Online Magazine Celebrates One Year

I posted about this on my Examiner.com page this morning, but I want to share it with you guys, too. I have been reading this online magazine for one year now, ever since it launched in July, 2008.

Founded by Bonnie Calhoun, the Christian Fiction Online Magazine brings information on all things Christian fiction, including book reviews, author interviews, blog tours, advice to writers, even a couple of short stories each month for your reading pleasure. There are also contests, in which you can win boxes of books. How cool is that!

Articles and information is provided by both regular monthly columnists and rotating columnists. Some of the names you might recognize are: Randy Ingermanson, Brandilyn Collins, Rachel Hauck, Denise Hunter, Mary DeMuth, and Dave Meigs. There are articles filed under six different categories: Best, Buzz, Berzerk, Brilliant, Biz, and Blitz.

I encourage you to check it out!

Don't forget to leave a comment on my post from last Wednesday! Commenting is the only way you can win the FaithWriters anthology of your choice! If you don't enter by the time the clock strikes midnight on Tuesday, you'll turn into a giant pumpkin! AND you will lose your chance to enter, so do it now before time runs out! I'm Officially an Examiner!

Some great news! I was recently named the Grand Rapids Christian Fiction Examiner for Examiner.com!

If you're unfamiliar with Examiner.com, it's a news and information site on thousands of topics. Many topics are covered nationally, but there are dozens of local Examiners, as well, covering local news and events. As the Grand Rapids Christian Fiction Examiner, I will be covering everything related to Christian fiction, sometimes with local ties - such as bookstore events and book signings. Other things I hope to include are book reviews, debut author profiles, author interviews, general genre information, and new fiction releases.

I first heard of Examiner.com from my friend, Tracy Ruckman, who was named the national Christian Writing Examiner. I wrote an article on FaithWriters for her page and thought the whole concept of Examiner.com was pretty cool. Then, another friend of mine (hi, Cari!) notified me that she discovered that Grand Rapids had been added to the Examiner.com list of local cities that needed coverage. I reached for the handle, and...Voila! God opened the door!

I am very excited about this opportunity and am trying to build my content. This is where you come in!

Here are a few things I am looking for. If you are willing to help, please leave a comment with a way for me to contact you. Thanks in advance!

  • Published Authors willing to be interviewed

  • Published Authors willing to do book giveaways

  • Notifications of contests - either book giveaways or other (these can be giveaways you have on your websites or blogs. Great promotion for you!

  • Debut Authors - just published for the first time, willing to be profiled

  • Information or articles you're willing to share with Christian Fiction readers about individual genres (such as romance, mystery, suspense, historical). These articles can be already published on your blogs. I just need permission to use them on my page.

  • Book Trailers for recent (or upcoming) book releases

  • Avid Christian Fiction readers willing to be interviewed about the types of books you love or talk about a particular book that touched you in a powerful way.

  • Recommended websites or blogs of interest to the Christian Fiction reader.
I would love for you to subscribe to my page! And please spread the word to those you know who are fans of Christian (or inspirational) Fiction. I look forward to providing interesting and helpful information about all things related to Christian Fiction.

Great Reads - Mom Lit and Hen/Lady Lit

Well, I got my Stiletto entry in. Yay!

I have to mention...A little birdie told me that this contest is hurting for entries so if you have a couple free days to polish up your manuscript (or even write the first 35 pages), PLEASE do! They need at least 10 entries per category for that category to stand alone. And as of two days ago, the only category with 10 entries was the Classic Lit. If they don't receive enough entries, they may have to cancel the whole contest. And that CAN'T happen. I'd be heartbroken. So, unless you want to feel the guilt for contributing to my broken heart, get that chick lit entry in before the 15th! http://www.chicklitwriters.com/

Anyway...

Today, I'm going to list some great reads in the Christian chick lit sub-genres, Mom Lit and Hen/Lady Lit. So grab your pen and write these down. Then head to your local Christian book store (gotta support those Christian bookstores) and pick up a couple for some fabulous summer reading! (I apologize for the weird formatting. Blogger is frustrating and a pain, especially when it comes to posting photos.)

MOM LIT - Ah...my favorite lit of all, probably because I am a mom and can relate to the craziness and ridiculousness that these characters endure. I have, in fact, written a mom lit, which I am beginning to edit today! Someday, I hope my name makes the list of good mom-lit reads. Til then, this list will definitely suffice:

The Claire Series by Tracy Bateman. This is an excellent series about a divorced mom of 4 whose life consists of one speed bump after another. Join Claire as she deals with the challenges of single parenthood, including dealing with her ex-husband's new wife. This series is filled with laughs, struggles, and yes - romance! The series is made up of three books - "Leave it to Claire", "I Love Claire", and "Claire knows Best."

Chocolate Beach by Julie Carobini. While reading this book, I became an instant fan of Julie Carobini. This is a smart, witty story about a "beach chick" mom who is evaluating her life and her marriage. Things she's dealing with include insecurities about her marriage, her nosy mother-in-law, and her know-it-all best friend. If you're looking for a delicious story, set on the beach, pick up a copy of Chocolate Beach.

The Becky Miller Series by Sharon Hinck. Here's a blurb: Becky’s rich fantasy life helps her cope with the pressure to be a Wonderful Wife and Marvelous Mom. But she keeps hearing the tape play: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it: support your husband when he loses his job, nurture an eccentric circle of friends, raise perfect Christian children, live a life full of grand Purpose, all while standing on your head and whistling Dixie. Your fantasy will self-destruct in five seconds.” If you're a busy mother of small children, you will relate!

The Baby Chronicles by Judy Baer. This is the sequel to The Whitney Chronicles and follows Whitney Blake on her unpredictable journey to motherhood.

SAHM I Am by Meredith Efkin. I can't offer a personal opinion but this book is currently on my to-be-read pile. As a computer/email addict, and a SAHM (well, a WAHM), I can't wait to read this book, written exclusively in an e-mail loop format.

HEN/LADY LIT. If your kids are grown and have moved out of the house (or haven't, but should!), you'll relate to the lives of Hen/Lady Lit characters. I'm not quite at that point in my own life but have enjoyed several books in this genre. Here are a few of my favorites:

Reality Queen by Debbie DiGiovanni. This book is my favorite hen lit. A recent empty-nester, Stephy Daniels gets a job as a reality television production assistant and ends up in front of the camera instead of behind it. This story is smart with consistent and well-paced humor. If you love reality TV or are dealing with empty-nest-syndrome, this book is for you!

Bargain Hunters Series by Sharon Dunn. If you love a good mystery and a good sale, you'll adore Sharon Dunn's Bargain Hunters series. Death of a Garage Sale Newbie and Death of the Six Foot Teddy Bear are currently available. Death at a Discount is releasing this year.

  • The Wedding Caper and Gone with the Groom, by Janice Thompson. Here's another great cozy mystery series that follows amateur sleuth, Annie Peterson, as she sets out to solve a robbery case in The Wedding Caper and then searches for her missing future son-in-law in Gone with the Groom. Fun stories with several chuckles and a lot of heart.

  • The Bouncing Grandma by A.K. Arenz. Haven't read this one yet but it looks so good! Definitely putting this one on my to-be-read pile, too. Here's a blurb: When "bouncing grandma" Glory Harper sees a foot dangling out of the back of a rolled up carpet movers are carrying into her new neighbors' house, her imagination runs wild. The trouble is nobody believes her suspicions that a murder has been committed--especially the police, who know her all too well as the woman who caused a multi-car pileup while skateboarding with her grandson.

I hope you've enjoyed this week's Chick Lit topic. If you've never read the lits, I enourage you to pick up a couple and come back to post your thoughts. If you're already a fan, YAY! Keep buying those books to let publishers know that chick lit is still a very much loved genre! As I mentioned before, I believe it will always be around, no matter what label it's hidden behind.

Long live Chick Lit!
